Session four of the Youth Leadership Program began with President Houtan Taba leading the group in the invocation, pledge of allegiance, and recitation of the Toastmasters mission statement.
President Taba then reviewed objectives for the meeting and introduced a word-of-the-day, “achievement.”
Toastmaster Millie Tannen led the group in Table Topics, calling on the following participants to discuss the topic indicated:
Chad Cutlip It’s September and you had the best summer job ever. What was it? Adi Jovovic You’re at a job interview. Please tell us why we should hire you. Elizabeth Oehl It’s 30 years from now and you’re writing your autobiography. What’s happening on page 147? Pulin Patel You had a great summer doing volunteer work. What did you do> Mayuri Shah What would you like to be doing 20 years from now? Houtan Taba You starred in a movie this summer. What role did you play? Milo Holt gave a brief educational speech on the elements of effective evaluations and lectern protocol.
President Taba reviewed assignment of Evaluators before calling Speakers and then introduced each Speaker in turn.
* Jonathan delivered a 5-minute unscheduled speech to fill in for an absent participant.
After delivery of the speeches and a five minute break, President Houtan Taba led the Evaluation section of the meeting.
Program Coordinator Beverly Farnell led the group in conducting officer elections for the program’s second half. Officers elected are: President Mayuri Shah Vice President Ashley Graham Secretary Adi Jovovic Sgt. at Arms Houtan Taba
(note: see Program Leaders section of the web site for pictures) Program Coordinator Beverly Farnell then presented a discussion of good speech organization and reviewed speech assignments for the next few meetings. The topic of each speech will be chosen by the speaker and should be four to five minutes long. Each speaker should prepare in advance to deliver a speech on something that interests him or her. Following is the schedule for the next series of prepared speeches:
Those who are not scheduled as a speaker in a particular week will be called upon to serve as an Evaluator or for Table Topics. Everyone should have an opportunity to participate in some capacity at each meeting.
Members voted on the Best Evaluator and Table Topics Speaker. The Best Evaluator ribbon went to Sagar Vijapura and Chad Cutlip won the ribbon for Best Table Topics. A ribbon for best use of the Word of the Day was also awarded to Jonathan Tannen.
Toastmaster Nandu Shah delivered an overall evaluation of the meeting, noting good progress and offering a few pointers, e.g., use of hand gestures, speaking with sufficient volume, and being aware of Ahs and Ums.
Program Coordinator Beverly Farnell provided the Ah Counters report.
President Taba turned the gavel over to incoming President Mayuri Shah, who adjourned the meeting at 5:37 p.m.
