April 7, 2002 Meeting Minutes

The meeting opened with an invocation (delivered by George Oehl), the pledge of allegiance to the flag and a group reading of the Toastmasters mission statement.

Welcome Participants

The inaugural meeting of the Beauclerc-Mandarin Toastmasters Youth Leadership Program was held on Sunday April 7, 2002. Eighteen young adults from various schools attended. Chairman Pro-tem Beverly Farnell welcomed participants, and the executive committee from BM Toastmasters introduced themselves to the audience.

What is the Youth Leadership Program?

David J. Rafanowicz delivered a brief explanation of the Youth Leadership Program and its goals. He stressed the importance of developing effective public speaking and communication skills, and the efficacy of the Toastmasters process in achieving that end.

Warm up Exercise

Beverly led the group in a warm up exercise, separating the group into pairs and instructing them to interview each other. Following the exercise, each participant delivered a brief introduction from the lectern of the individual he or she had interviewed.

Principals of Chairmanship

Beverly presented the elements of chairmanship and parliamentary procedure, outlining the role of a chairman in keeping the meeting efficient and on track.

Nomination and Election of Officers

Following a short break, participants were directed to nominate candidates for the roles of President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Sergeant at Arms to serve in those capacities for the first four meetings. Beverly guided the group in a parliamentary process to make nominations to the slate.

The nominations were:
