The final meeting of the eight-week Youth Leadership Program was held at the Haskell Company conference room. Parents and siblings were invited to attend and recognize participant’s accomplishments.

President Mayuri Shah chaired the meeting. She opened with an invocation, recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag and the Toastmasters’ Mission Statement. Mayuri then welcomed guests and thanked them for coming.

Program Coordinator Beverly Farnell introduced herself to the guests and talked about why she decided to participate in the program. She also called upon the entire group of Assistants and Advisors to introduce themselves and likewise discuss their decision to participate.

Toastmaster David J. Rafanowicz provided an overview of the program’s objectives and how the Toast of Jax Club launched the program.

Toastmaster Millie Tannen explained the purpose of Table Topics – to develop impromptu speaking skills and be able to think on your feet – and led the group in a series of ad hoc questions, including what they got out of the program, what they would suggest to improve the program, and what they would tell their friends to encourage them to participate.

Toastmaster Yurania Causey discussed the objectives involved in having participants deliver prepared speeches and introduced President Mayuri Shah to deliver the first prepared speech.

Prepared Speeches

Mayuri Shah         Spoke on the generation gap and explained that not everyone in her age group is irresponsible or reckless, despite parental paradigms.

Jonathan Tannen   Delivered a prepared speech on board games, from Scrabble, to Trivial Pursuit, Monopoly and Risk and suggested a possible new game combining Monopoly and Risk.

Bernard Chu         Talked on the subject of “masks,” as in the masks people wear, and his recent, frank discussion with a friend who dropped the mask and revealed the real person behind the mask.

President Shah called upon Toastmaster Milo Holt to explain the purpose of evaluations in developing communication skills.

Speeches were evaluated by Marco Rojas, Ashley Graham and Rebecca Roden.

Toastmaster Nandu Shah provided a general evaluation of the meeting and the program overall. Nandu also distributed evaluation forms for participants to provide feedback and suggestions for improvement.

President Mayuri Shah announced winners and presented ribbons for:

Best Table Topic:     Rebecca Roden

Best Evaluator:       Ashley Graham

Best Speaker:         Mayuri Shah

Program Coordinator Beverly Farnell led the “graduation” ceremony and presented Certificates of Completion to program participants.

Toastmaster Nandu Shah delivered the Ah Counter’s report (noting a vast improvement since earlier meetings)

President Mayuri Shah called on parents to comment upon the meeting, with each and every one using the word “impressed” in commenting upon both the meeting and the program.

Program Coordinator Beverly Farnell was recognized by the group with a standing ovation.

The meeting was adjourned by President Mayuri Shah at 5:25 p.m.

Refreshments and lamination of Completion Certificates followed the meeting. Many thanks to all the participants, parents, and coordinators for making the final meeting a success.
